In these challenging times, it is more important than ever for SMEs to be competitive, not just locally but also globally. While SMEs comprise 99 percent of all businesses in Malaysia, they contribute 32 percent to the GDP, which is less than that contributed by SMEs in a few of our neighbouring countries. The Government aims to raise SMEs’ contribution and has provided a number of assistance packages for SMEs for this purpose.

SMEs have many things working in their favour. They are agile and flexible and can take advantage of new technology. To a large extent, SMEs are focused on the domestic market. It is appropriate that SMEs consider competing at the global level. Malaysia has produced many home-grown SMEs that have become global players so this is not an impossible task. I hope SMEs will take advantage of the opportunities of the many support initiatives made available by the Government.

I commend the publishers, SMI Association of Malaysia and Tourism Publications Corporation Sdn Bhd for compiling this directory which would serve as a useful reference for those interested in doing business with Malaysian SMEs.

From,
Minister of International Trade & Industry,
Tan Sri Dato’ Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin
