Malaysia is going through the stage of rapid development in tandem with its vision of achieving a developed nation status by 2020. As we are focused on building the nation, we must also be mindful of the effects of development on our environment. The Ministry of Housing and Local Government’s vision is to provide quality of life and sustainable living environment for all levels of Malaysian society. To help preserve our natural environment, the business sector can do their part as responsible corporate citizens by ensuring their wastes are collected, transported, treated and disposed off effectively and efficiently.

As SMEs account for a majority of business establishments in Malaysia, they have a strong social and environmental responsibility to uphold. Employers can lead by example by implementing a proper waste management and recycling programme and by educating their employees on the importance of 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) in the workplace. The Ministry emphasises on 3R and provides enabling provisos through the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007, which provides for, amongst others, mandatory sorting at source, take back system and deposit refund scheme.

I would like to congratulate SMI Association of Malaysia and Tourism Publications Corporation Sdn Bhd for publishing the 8th edition of the SME Business Directory and for their efforts in highlighting the issues of environmental protection and waste management in this publication.

Let’s all do our part to preserve the natural beauty of Malaysia.

From,
Minister of Housing & Local Government,
Dato' Seri Ong Ka Chuan
