In the current environment of escalating prices and the turmoil sweeping through the world’s financial markets, it is indeed a very challenging time for SMEs. But as the very best entrepreneurs will attest, there’s opportunity in every adversity, and in this context, SMEs must take appropriate measures to strengthen their operations and increase their effi ciency. The ability of the local SMEs to adapt effectively to this challenging business landscape is crucial not only for their own viability but also to the nation’s economy.

One of the ways to offset the adverse effects of a weakening global economy is to expand the scope of the business by diversifying and venturing into new markets. SMEs should consider offering their products and services in different regions that have strong purchasing power. SMEs should also strive to streamline their operations to trim costs and to operate at maximum effi ciency. More important than ever, SMEs must address the issues and overcome the challenges that are facing them, in areas such as human resource
development, access to information technology and technology sharing and access to financing facilities.

The 8th edition of the SME Business Directory was conceived with all the above factors in mind. We have revamped the entire editorial
section to give it a new look and we have also updated the articles and added new ones to ensure their relevance in the new economy.
We hope that you’ll find the publication to be of benefit to your business.

Thank you.

From,
National President,
SMI Association of Malaysia,
Chua Tiam Wee, JSM, AMS, PJK
