Held in conjunction with Global Entrepreneur Week 2009, InnoTech 2009 proved to be an ideal platform for local entrepreneurs to exchange ideas, opinions and tips with some of the most influential thinkers on innovation.
With the theme “Innovating Success in the New Economy”, InnoTech 2009 relied on an informal classroom format of plenary sessions and tracks to engage participants in discussions on critical issues faced by today's entrepreneurs, including securing funding in the current economic climate, developing products and services with unique value propositions, and the role of technology-enabled collaboration initiatives in facilitating a free flow of information sharing.
The annual summit was organized by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and is part of the Malaysian Government's MSC Malaysia effort to develop the country's ICT industry by nurturing and providing guidance to local technopreneurs and K-SMEs in ICT.
“Innovation is a crucial ingredient in the success of any business, even more so in the current economic climate,” said Roslan Bakri Zakaria, Director, Industry Development Division at MDeC. “By encouraging, enhancing and expanding innovation and innovative thinking, InnoTech 2009 aims to help Malaysian entrepreneurs gain fresh ideas and new perspectives on how to make their businesses more globally competitive.” Roslan added.
The two-day summit also provided 20 qualified local companies and technopreneurs the opportunity to pitch to multiple venture capitalists (VCs) concurrently. The previous year’s summit saw RM5 million to RM8 million in VC funding secured collectively for qualifying companies, a resounding achievement which MDeC was confident would be repeated this year.
Held on 17 and 18 November 2009 at Berjaya Hotel and Convention Centre, InnoTech 2009 was attended by hundreds of industry players and members of the public was eager to interact and learn from successful entrepreneurs and industry leaders including international research consultancy IDC Asia/Pacific Consulting Operations vice president Victor Lim and business radio station BFM CEO Malek Ali. Attendees were also treated to product launches, showcases and special forums by technology-driven interest groups and associations such as Gorgeous Geeks and the Technopreneurs Association of Malaysia (TeAM).
This year's summit was made all the more memorable with the hosting of a special CEO Cocktail attended by industry people and members of the media. Held at the conclusion of InnoTech 2009, the cocktail was the first of its kind to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of several MSC Malaysia status companies, including those which successfully obtained fund deals from as high as RM8.5 million.
