From an idea spearheaded by Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen, the man credited as the founder of Mimos, the concept paper for the formation of Institute of Microelectronics R&D was introduced to the Prime Minister in August 1984. Subsequently the paper on the formation of the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems was tabled and approved by the Cabinet on 17th October 1984. Finally on 1st January, 1985 the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems commenced operations as a unit of the Prime Minister's Department.
MIMOS went through various changes beginning with a transfer as a department under the Ministry of Science Technology and Environment (MOSTE) in November, 1990. In 1994 MIMOS was appointed as the Secretariat to the National IT Council (NITC), whereby through the NITC it played a pivotal role in the development of the framework for Malaysia 's Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC).
In November, 1996 MIMOS Berhad was corporatised as a company under the Ministry of Finance (MoF) with 3 core functions - R&D, National IT Policy Development and Business Development. Following this in 2003 the role of the NITC Secretariat was officially transferred to the Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia (MECM) and MIMOS was instructed to focus on R&D activities and to gradually separate businesses from its structure. In 2006 plans were announced to turn MIMOS into Malaysia's premier R&D organisation in ICT and microelectronics, a world class R&D Centre of Excellence. It also began the pursuit of applied research in frontier technologies aimed at growing globally competitive indigenous industries to move Malaysia up the value chain and ensure accelerated economic growth.
Mimos Core Resarch Areas
Mimos focus in applied research areas is based on the real-world trends. The areas are which are currently its focus areas are: Cyberspace Security, Encryption Systems, Grid Computing, Communication Technologies, Micro Energy, Micro Systems (MEMS/NEMS), Advanced Informatics, Knowledge Technology and Micro Energy.
Mimos Strategies
MIMOS pursues exploratory and industry-driven applied research through multi-stakeholder smart partnerships, which include universities, research institutes, Government and industries, with an emphasis on frontier technologies. The aim is to drive globally recognized Centres of Excellence to promote and license MIMOS technologies or IPs to move Malaysian ICT industry higher up the value chain.
MIMOS technology transfers target the mission of pioneering innovative ICT technologics to grow globally competitive indigenous industries. To this end the know how is transferred to selected recipients for further innovation and development into usable products and applications.
MIMOS is currently spearheading KnowledGRID Malaysia, the National Grid Computing Initiative under the Ninth Malaysian Plan.
The strong dynamism of the MIMOS leadership complemented by world-class thinkers and scientists together works towards producing innovative technology platforms and transformation of the landscape of local indigenous industries.
