Extensive Knowledge & Experience
Looking back, Ooi attributes his steady ascent within his company to his willingness to learn and to go the extra mile. “The experience I gained at branch level also played a major role in my understanding of issues and challenges faced in a corporation like Canon,” he says. His thorough understanding of the business enabled him to identify and to solve issues from a macro viewpoint.
At the head office, Ooi’s job responsibility is to manage the marketing functions, which was a whole new ballgame to him. With a keen willingness to learn, he relished the challenge to do well and with the expert guidance from his CEO, he soon excelled in his new role. His commitment to support both branches and HQ meant having to work long hours daily, which proved to be very stressful but at the same time rewarding. He says, “I’m happy to see positive changes in the results coming from the
branches through improved sales contribution. The branch heads have also pledged their support to me, especially when they realize that they have my full commitment to support branches nationwide.”
Supportive Family
Ooi is also blessed with an understanding family who knows of his work commitments and he is grateful to them for their moral support. Although Ooi is very busy with his career, he makes sure
that he fulfils his responsibility as a good husband and father. He explains, “With my supportive family, I can focus more on my work and play a bigger role in my company. But to be fair to
them, when I’m back home in Penang, I’ll take over the normal household chores that my wife does when I’m not around, such as cooking for my children and sending them to tuition classes.”
Self-improvement
Due to his hectic schedule, Ooi finds it too time consuming to read books. Hence, he found a faster way to enhance his knowledge, which is by searching for information on the Internet. “Let’s say
I want to know more about a certain topic. All I need to do is to search for this topic on Google and I can get the information from all the relevant websites listed,” he explains.
Lifestyle & Health
Currently, Ooi practices chi kung every morning without fail to maintain his health as it helps him regain his energy level. On top of this, he also meditates as a way to relieve stress. He says, “Meditation is a good way to make ourselves calm and to balance our body’s energy. It
rejuvenates me and gives me the energy to go through the day. Otherwise, it would be very tough to keep up with my daily work schedule.” This all came about when he went through a short stint as a novice monk in Penang, where chanting and meditation were the order for the day. Speaking of health, Ooi likes to read articles from chinese health magazines in his free time and have acquired the know how to brew his own herbal tea concoctions, which he prepares for his family.
Secret of His Success
Ooi attributes a big part of his success to the constant application of the Canon “San-Ji” Spirit: Ji-hatsu (selfmotivation), Ji-chi (self-management) & Ji-kaku (selfawareness), both at work and in his daily life. He also cites his CEO as being one of the key influences who has guided him throughout the years, advising him to start with a strong basic foundation and to do things systematically.
He opines, “Only when we get the basics right, then we can move on to a higher level.”
Personal Philosophy
Ooi shares his personal philosophy, “You must love your job. Once you love your job, you’ll work with passion and full dedication. You must be very determined and be mentally strong. Don’t let negative forces influence you and don’t blame others for your failures. Be very clear on your goals and objectives. Once you have identified your goals, go all out to achieve them.”
Moving forward, Ooi has set himself new goals in his new position, which is to further enhance his knowledge in marketing and to speed up the growth of BIS division. With his drive, passion and loyalty towards Canon, this is certainly attainable, without a shadow of a doubt.
